Isotype Cartography and the last update on the California map Kickstarter before it launches (next week!).
🌲ISOTYPE CARTOGRAPHY
The Isotype Institute created hundreds of enchanting information graphics throughout the 1940s. Founder Otto Neurath and leader Marie Neurath worked with designer Gerd Arntz to perfect a style that appears almost child-like on the surface. Study their work for a little while and you will see how sophisticated it really is.
Among many types of graphics, Isotype maps are particularly engaging. The map below, Cross-sections through the Soviet Union, is from a 1945 book titled Two Commonwealths.
The map presents something familiar in a totally unique way. Elevation profiles are abstracted into almost cartoonish proportions. Land cover is suggested by friendly symbols. The textures and character of the printing add to the charm.
There are many resources to learn more about Isotype. My colleague Jason Forrest (Twitter) has embarked on a new essay campaign titled LESSONS OF ISOTYPE that dives into the details of their craft. Read his newest work, Exploring Isotype Charts (Medium).
↗️ MAP KICKSTARTER UPDATE
As you may have guessed, Isotype maps are the direct inspiration for Cross-sections through California. I introduced the map to the public last week at the David Rumsey Map Center:
Big screens are fun, but this map was built to be held in real life. Everyone who has gotten their paws on it loves it. I can't wait for you to hold it too:
The Kickstarter is written and ready. It will launch this Monday evening, Feb 24. I will send a special early access link then so you will have an opportunity to buy it at the "early bird" price.
Onward! -RJ
