π A HUGE APPETITE
was designed by Mark Hallett and painted by Barbara Hoopes for ZOOBOOKS Elephants issue (1980). I last saw it as a child sprawled across my bedroom floor. Recently, wanting to relive nostalgia, I hunted its issue down on ebay and reached out to Ms. Hoopes, who related "[illustration] takes lots of hours, but it is good gratifying work." I still find this one a sensational diagram with an inescapable visual message: elephants eat a lot. Keeping an elephant fed is not fathomable. As a child, I had no idea if this is what a 12,000 pound stack of dried alfalfa actually looks like. I still do not know, and do not care. The absurdity of seeing the whole buffet is what makes it memorable.
π INFO WE TRUST
Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic (Twitter) just published a long form conversation we had about my book (Amazon) on her podcast. Her expertise + deep engagement with the text made for a most excellent interview.Β Link.
